Board Update - October 30, 2024
Dear Aurora Families,
We are pleased to share highlights from the recent board meeting. Aurora Academic Charter School is committed to transparency and engagement, and we are thankful to everyone for such a productive start to the school year.
Financial Review
The financial overview for September 2024 was presented. Key highlights included revenue exceeding projections, with a strong performance from Alberta Education contributions. Total expenses reached $1.3 million for the month, and despite an early deficit due to start-up costs, we are closely monitoring the budget for stability.
Enrollment and Growth
Enrollment numbers remain strong, with over 1,210 students enrolled. The board discussed additional facilities updates to accommodate our growing student body, including the expansion of the high school program to include Grade 12, and renovations at the Sherbrooke, Alberta Avenue, and Skyrattler campuses.
Policy Updates
- Policy 2150 BP: Appeals Procedure - Establishes new protocols for stakeholder engagement, encouraging active participation in school governance and planning.
- Policy 5130 BP: Staff Attire - Outlines dress code expectations for staff to maintain a professional and inclusive work environment.
- Policy 8030 BP: Community Use of Facilities - Specifies guidelines for community use of school facilities, aligning with the school’s philosophy and values.
- Policy 8200 BP: Tobacco, Alcohol, and Cannabis-Free Facilities - Includes prohibitions on tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, and vaping products on school property, including school buses.
Superintendent's Report
Superintendent Ian Gray shared updates on dual credit programs, wellness grants, and the new strategic plan for Aurora. Notably, a $50,000 grant will allow high school students to gain credits through partnerships with local colleges. Additional wellness initiatives are also underway, including a new outdoor garden.
